2024 Exploring History Speaker Series

January 28: Scott Bean, Greet Magazine Columnist, will speak about the fascinating history of Haines Park and its important role in public health. This lecture will be the highlight of our annual meeting, free and open to all. 1:30 pm at the Barrington Public Library, Salem Auditorium.

March 7: Adrian Weimer, Providence College History Professor will speak about Rhode Island’s colonial history and explore how events here were intricately tied to the British Crown and the British Parliament. Free and open to all. 7:00 pm at the Barrington Public Library, Salem Auditorium.

May 8: Scott MacKay, former Providence Journal writer and RI Public Radio commentator will speak on the intersection of news, history and politics. Lecture to be held at the Barrington Public Library, Salem Auditorium. Check back for details.

June ? (date and time tbd): Christian McBurney, author and curator of the SmallStateBigHistory website will speak on his latest research. Lecture to be held at the Barrington Public Library, Salem Auditorium. Check back for details.

Summer or Fall (date and time tbd): Luther Spoehr, Brown University, History Professor Emeritus will speak on the history and cultural significance of the once immensely talented and popular Barrington Players theater group. Lecture to be held at the Barrington Public Library, Salem Auditorium. Check back for details.

History Tours

Spring or Summer (date and time tbd): Old Barrington Village Walking Tour. Join Preservation Society President Stephen Venuti for 90-minute (1.5 mile round trip) walking tour along County Road to learn about the taverns, stage coach stops, post offices, blacksmith shops, one-room schoolhouses and the homes of revolutionary-war patriots that were once part of the original village called Barrington.

Fall (date and time tbd): Prince’s Hill History Stroll.  Join Preservation Society Board Members for a stroll through Barrington’s Historic Prince’s Hill Cemetery and learn about its connection to Plymouth Colony and colonial history. Check back for details.

Historic Homes

Fall (date and time tbd): Each Year the Preservation Society presents plaques to Barrington Homes that have been selected for their historic significance and have maintained their original character for at least 100 years.

Town Museum

Every Wednesday Morning and by appointment, the Barrington Town Museum, operated and curated by the Barrington Preservation Society is free to visitors and open to the public.
